Hello crafty friends,
Here’s the final card that I created for the Altenew Educator Certification Program – Level 2. I will be diving into the some fun masking techniques for my card.
Stamping an image and die cutting it using coordinating dies is something we card makers do almost for all our cards, be it focal point images, creating backgrounds or sentiment strips. But did you know, you could use the negatives of the die cuts as stencils and masks.
For my card today, I stamped and die cut a beautiful floral image and used the negative of the die cut as a mask to create some interest on my background.
Let’s first take a look at the card that I created –

As always, I wanted to create a very clean and simple card, but with a twist. I started by stamping this beautiful floral focal point image from the Dainty Flowers Stamp Set and colored it using Spectrum Noir Tri Blend Markers. I love this image, since it’s really sleek and does not cover a lot of our card background.
Once I colored the image, I die cut it using the coordinating die.

After cutting, I kept the negative and decied to use it as a stencil mask to create something fun on my background. Just to make sure, this negative piece did not move while I was ink blending over it, I cut the same image using the Altenew Masking tape. (If you are confident holding the paper die cut negative in place while you ink blend over it, you can skip this step of using the masking tape.)

I adhered the die cut masking tape negative a little towards the right hand side of the Kraft cardstock panel. I decided to use white ink to ink blend on this blank space with in the nagative space of the mask.

Once I was done ink blending, I carefully removed the mask. I love using the Altenew Masking Tape, since I know this won’t tear my cardstock panel once I peel it off.
I then stamped the “Hope you have a happy day” sentiment from the Alluring Orchids Stamp Set right next to my ink blended floral image and added some black watercolor splatters.

Using some tiny foam squares, I placed the colored floral focal point slightly off set from our ink blended piece.
I thought the white not only gave a shadow effect to the focal point but also acted as a base and added some depth and dimension for our floral image.

I love how clean and simple this card turned out. There are so many ways you could use your masking tapes or little die cut pieces to create something absolutely beautiful.
The Altenew Educator Certification Program is definitely a best opportunity to showcase my work and get in touch with all of the amazing crafters.
